Our Junior Members Stepped up to the Plate at the 2008 BREA August Combined Tests and Dressage Show

Wow!  Great success to the BREA youth for its August 9th show.  Many compliments were given for the well run schooling opportunity our Juniors provided.  It was great seeing all of the hard work everyone contributed. Thanks to Whitney for heading up the dressage rings and the Gaebes for the challenging jumping course design.  Also a big thanks to Monica for her volunteer recruiting efforts, willingness to take on this project and the constant allegiance she has given to the BREA board. 

Our profit from the show was over $2000 which is fantastic.  After much discussion we have decided that each member of the BREA young riders who have contributed over six hours of time to the BREA shows are eligible for a $150 scholarship to be used toward the Lucinda Green clinic on October 18th and 19th.   If they are also pony club member, this will bring the cost of the clinic down to $200 per person.  Please get in touch with Susan Icove immediately if you are wanting to ride in the Lucinda clinic.  A discussion was had that remaining funds be used towards building some new jumps at Green Hill.
 

 
 

BREA Polo Shirts Available for Purchase

The Blue Ridge Eventing Association is once again offering BREA Polo Shirts for purchase.  The shirts will be available in either royal blue with a yellow logo or yellow with a royal logo.  Shirts may be picked up at any BREA meeting or event, or by special arrangement with clothing coordinator, Kim Huffman.  Click here for the Word version or here for the PDF writeable version of the Polo Shirt Order Form.

2007 BREA June Combined Tests and Dressage Show a Huge Success

    

    

Our young riders rose to the occasion and raised over $1000 profit at this year's BREA Combined Tests and Dressage Show on June 23.  Proceeds from this show will help send a team of young riders to the MidSouth Team Challenge in Lexington Kentucky this October. 

Under the leadership of the young rider board of directors representative, Emmy Hairfield, ninety percent of the work from this show was provided by the youth of our organization.  We would like to thank Meridith McGrath for teaching us how to set up a dressage arena, and recognize Crystal Founds, Karina Miller, Laurel Nathan, Margaux Lander, and Emmy and Leah Hairfield for their brut muscle strength setting up the jumping course which was designed and executed by Emmy Hairfield.

On Saturday we had the diligent help of Monica Gaebe who was a our dressage scribe.  In the show jumping ring was ably crewed with the help of Carrie and Grace Fowler, Paige Gaebe, Emmy Hairfield, and Ali Hoffman.  Leah Hairfield was the cutest and quickest runner, stable manager, and office assistant a secretary could have.

2007 Carol Kozlowski Clinic a Hit with BREA Members

On June 16-17, the BREA descended upon the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington VA to participate in the USEA Carol Kozlowski Cross Country/Show Jumping Clinic.  BREA members riding in the clinic were Debby Bright, Alicia Daily, Emily Daily, Susan Huff, Bernard Hylton, Candi Hylton, Linda Oberlender, Catalina Oliver, and Jennifer Wolz.  Organizer of the clinic was BREA member D.C. McBroom who was greatly assisted by her husband, Steve.

Each rider participated in two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  The morning sessions were devoted to sharpening flatwork and honing show jumping skills.  In the afternoon, the riders then took what they had learned out onto the cross country courses.  Carol's main focus throughout the clinic was encouraging the riders to push their horses in front of their leg, let go with their hands, and allow their horses to do their share of the work.  At first, some of the riders found it challenging to give up so much "control", especially when their horses tried to take advantage of their new found freedom.  By the end of the clinic, however, Carol was able to help the riders create a better working relationship with their horses and the partnerships between the two improved as a result.   It was a beautiful thing to watch the light bulbs go off for the riders and the horses become joyful in their work.  Every rider came away from the clinic with a higher understanding of themselves, their horses, and what is possible when each trusts the other to hold up their end of the bargain.  Needless to say, Carol was a bit hit and plans are in the works to have her come back again soon.
